What Sidekick app extensions changed

Sidekick is Shopify's built-in AI assistant. It could always work with Shopify itself. On 17 June 2026 Shopify let it work with your other apps too, and that is the shift worth understanding.

Here is the part people get wrong: the apps are not reaching into Sidekick on their own. You ask a question, and the first time you point Sidekick at an app it asks your permission. You grant access per app, one at a time. You stay the one who opens the door.

Once you do, an app shows up in one or both of two ways, and the difference is the whole story for your data.

It reads and answers

  • Ask, and it tells you. Sidekick searches the app and answers in chat. Nothing changes in your store, so this is risk-free, and it's where most of the value is.

It stages, you confirm

  • It can act, with your sign-off. Sidekick sets up a change in the app and you approve it. Handy, but a confirmed change is a real change, and some cannot be undone.

What the chat shows you, and what it doesn't

One honest limit, straight from Sidekick. When it does something in an app, the chat hands you a tidy summary, not the full detail. We asked it directly, and it said the quiet part out loud: for the complete picture, open the app and check the exact state yourself.

Sidekick, in its own words

Treat the app's own dashboard as the source of truth, and use the chat to make changes faster, not to review them. For app changes a confirmation dialog always shows first, so nothing is applied without your approval.

So what happens when a change goes in wrong? It splits in two, and the split decides how much trouble you're in.

Is it actually valuable?

Short answer: yes, and mostly for a reason people underrate. The headline feature is "AI that does things," but the quiet win is "AI that answers." Three honest takes.

It collapses busywork. "What's my rating and what are people unhappy about, how did last week's campaign do, and when is my store busiest" used to be three apps and ten minutes. Now it's one question. That is real time back, every day.

It surfaces insight you'd skip. Most merchants never open the analytics tab on a Tuesday. When the answer is one question away, you check more often. You catch the dip in conversion, or the run of one-star reviews, while it still matters. Sidekick can even summarize, not just dump numbers.

The value leans toward reading. Asking is where the daily payoff is, and asking changes nothing, so there's no downside to leaning on it. Letting it make changes is a smaller, more occasional win, and it's the part that needs a little care.

The honest verdict

For getting answers, it's genuinely valuable and risk-free, use it freely. For making changes, it's convenient but you're trading a click for speed, so keep a recovery path under the changes that matter.

The one catch: bulk changes

This is the part worth slowing down for. Action extensions are designed well, Sidekick stages the change and you approve it, so nothing happens behind your back. But "approved" is not "reversible." We asked Sidekick point blank whether it could undo a Matrixify bulk import. Its own answer was refreshingly honest.

That's not a knock on Sidekick or the app. It's just how Shopify works: there's no global undo and no recycle bin for products, collections, pages or saved bulk edits. Use it with a safety net

You don't have to choose between moving fast and staying safe. You just need a floor under the changes. With automatic backups running, the trade flips. Ask Sidekick anything, and let it run the tasks you want. If a confirmed change goes wrong, you roll the affected data back to a point before it happened.

  1. Turn on automatic backups first. A backup only helps if it was taken before the change. Set it up while everything is fine, with TinyBackup or any backup app you trust.
  2. Ask Sidekick freely, and confirm the actions you want. Reads are safe; for changes, you have a recovery point behind you.
  3. If a confirmed change goes wrong, restore. Pick a backup from before the change and roll the affected data back, inside the app where you can see exactly what you're restoring.

What can Shopify Sidekick do with my apps now?
Once you grant it access to an app, it can search that app's data and answer questions, and it can stage an action inside the app that you confirm. For example it can pull your Judge.me ratings and review summary, your Avia store traffic and conversion rate, your email and SMS campaign stats, or your Matrixify import and export job status, all from one chat. Shopify made this generally available on 17 June 2026.
Do the apps connect to Sidekick automatically?
No. You ask a question, and the first time you point Sidekick at an app it asks your permission ("Allow Sidekick to access your Judge.me Reviews data?"). The app is not reaching into Sidekick on its own. You grant access per app, and you stay the one who opens the door.
Can Sidekick undo a change it makes through an app?
It depends. A setting can be reversed, by asking Sidekick to flip it back or by fixing it in the app. A bulk data overwrite is different. Asked whether it could undo a Matrixify import, Sidekick said that once an import runs and is confirmed the data is written to Shopify and it has no rollback capability, and that Shopify has no native undo for bulk changes. The only way back is a backup taken before the change.
Does the chat show me everything that changed?
Not the full detail. Sidekick gives you a summary of what it did, and its own advice is to open the app to verify the exact state, and to treat the app's dashboard as the source of truth. Use the chat to act faster, not to review what happened.
Does TinyBackup work with Sidekick?
TinyBackup's Sidekick role is read-only by design: answer questions about your backup status, history, coverage and what changed, in chat. It does not start backups or restore from Sidekick. Restoring stays inside the app, where you can review exactly what you're rolling back before it happens.
