How we measure: our 6 scoring parameters
To compare fairly, we judge every app the same way - on a real test store (a development store seeded with products, collections, pages, blog posts, a theme and metafields), installing each app one by one and scoring six parameters from 1 to 5. Here's what each parameter means and exactly how we score it:
Data coverage
How much of your store it actually backs up.
How many data types are captured: products, variants, collections, pages, blogs, theme, metafields, media.Restore
Whether you can put data back, and how precisely.
Restore granularity (a single item vs. the whole store) plus how fast and clean it is, tested by deleting items and restoring them.Automation
Does it protect you without you remembering?
Automatic scheduled + real-time backups (5) down to manual export only (1).Ease of use
Can a non-technical merchant set it up and restore under pressure?
Number of setup steps plus how clear the restore flow is when something has gone wrong.Pricing & value
What you pay for what you get.
Entry price and what the free tier covers, weighed against backup limits and coverage.Security & compliance
How your backed-up data is protected.
Encryption plus documented certifications (SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA) where your business needs them.Scores below come from our hands-on testing of TinyBackup plus each competitor's public App Store listing and documentation (June 2026). They're an editorial assessment, not lab-certified - re-run the test above and confirm each competitor's current capabilities before publishing.

| Built for Shopify | Yes | No | Yes | Yes |
| App Store rating | 5.0★ (44) | 4.2★ (617) | 4.8★ (124) | 5.0★ (14) |
Reading the ratings honestly: TinyBackup's 5.0 comes from a smaller base (44 reviews) than Rewind's 617 - Rewind is the most battle-tested by volume, but its 4.2 reflects real, repeated complaints (e.g. accounts deactivated after 90 days of inactivity while still being billed). We also score TinyBackup below Rewind and BackupMaster on security & compliance: both hold formal certifications (Rewind: SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR; BackupMaster: SOC 2, GDPR) and TinyBackup currently does not. Ratings, pricing & certs were read from the live App Store listings in June 2026 - reconfirm before publishing.
Support & Built for Shopify, at a glance
How you reach each team when something breaks, and which apps carry Shopify's "Built for Shopify" quality badge.
| App | Built for Shopify | Support channels | Responsiveness (from reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| TinyBackup | Yes | In-app support | Praised - restores handled within a day or two |
| Rewind | No | Email + Help Center / FAQ | Generally responsive; billing/reactivation gripes in 1-star reviews |
| BackupMaster | Yes | In-app + docs | "Prompt, efficient and friendly" |
| Syncora | Yes | In-app live chat + docs | "The support alone makes it worth it" |
Responsiveness here reflects merchant reviews, not a stopwatch: we did not run a timed support test, which would mean messaging each vendor. Want a live timed test (email / chat first-response time) on your shortlist? Ask and we'll run it.
How much do Shopify backup apps cost?
Entry prices and free tiers compared. Most backup apps price by order or product volume, so your real monthly cost rises with store size - the figures below are the starting points for each tier.
| App | Free plan | Entry paid plan | At 10,000 orders/mo |
|---|---|---|---|
| TinyBackup | Yes - agency / dev stores (50 orders) | $11/mo (Tiny, ≤150 orders) - 7-day trial | $197/mo (Large) |
| Rewind | No (7-day trial) | $19/mo (Backup + Restore, flat) | $669/mo (Protection Suite) |
| BackupMaster | Dev stores only | $19/mo (Essentials, ≤300 orders) | $299/mo (Plus) |
| Syncora | Yes (50 products) | $6.99/mo (Starter, ≤300 orders) | no plan (Pro caps at ~1,000 orders) |
Prices read from the App Store listings in June 2026. Tiers, order/product limits and backup-history length change often - confirm current pricing on each listing before deciding. Higher tiers mainly add volume limits and longer retention.

What merchants say
Why we picked it
It nails the two parameters that matter most day-to-day - coverage and easy restore - without the complexity or cost of an enterprise tool. Backups run automatically in the background; restoring is a couple of clicks. Its one trade-off is fewer formal compliance certifications than Rewind, so very large or regulated stores may prefer that.
Who it's for
Most independent Shopify merchants, and agencies protecting client stores, who want set-and-forget safety at an approachable price.
Rewind Backups
Pros
- Most certified - own SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR
- Item-level + bulk restore; 365-day history
- Most-reviewed and longest-running (since 2016)
- Integrations beyond Shopify (Klaviyo, Mailchimp, GitHub, Jira)
Cons
- Lowest rating here (4.2) with recurring 1-star themes
- Accounts deactivated after 90 days idle - while still billed (per reviews)
- Priciest ($19-$99); not Built for Shopify; no live chat
What merchants say
Why we picked it
The established, widely-adopted choice, and the clear leader on security & compliance - the natural fit when an auditor or a large customer is asking questions. Powerful, though heavier and pricier than a small store needs, and its rating trails the simpler apps.
Who it's for
Larger and Shopify Plus stores that need documented compliance and enterprise support.
BackupMaster
Pros
- Broadest data coverage (incl. translations & inventory)
- SOC 2 + GDPR, encrypted, Azure-hosted
- Praised UX - "intuitive interface, easy setup"
- Built for Shopify; free for dev stores
Cons
- Higher tiers get pricey ($39-$79/mo)
- Interface in English & German only
- A reviewer asked for an option not to store data on their servers
What merchants say
Why we picked it
The broadest data coverage here, fully certified, with a UX merchants consistently praise - a strong middle ground between an enterprise platform and a simple app. A solid pick if certifications and cloud storage matter to you.
Who it's for
Security-conscious stores comparing certified options.
Syncora
Pros
- Low price ($6.99); real-time backups
- Keeps a copy in your own Google Drive
- In-app live chat; broad coverage; Built for Shopify
Cons
- Tiny review base (14) - least proven here
- No formal certifications
- Top tier jumps to $49.99/mo
What merchants say
Why we picked it
Strong on automation, with the distinctive option of keeping your backup in your own Google Drive. Worth a look if owning the storage location appeals to you - just note the small review base.
Who it's for
Merchants who want real-time backups stored in their own cloud drive.
